OH MY GOSH I HATE WORKING IN CMYK MODE IN PHOTOSHOP.
What a piece of work. It was required that we use CMYK for this
project and working with it in a raster program was just evil...

Anyway, this was an interesting assignment. We were to create
a poster advocating literacy in some way, encouraging people to
improve their reading and writing skills to better their lives. At
first, I thought this would be really hard but I ended up settling
on a really simple concept. I think it's rather effective, don't you?

Strangely enough, I decided to use my own photography. I had
this Scrabble concept in my head and just had to experiment
with it. Instead of shooting indoors, I took the game pieces
outside for an entirely different environment. That's also my
sister's shoe in there. I meant to shoot without it originally,
but she accidentally got her shoe in the shot and I loved it,
so I asked her to pose for me. Besides, the Scrabble pieces by
themselves weren't strong enough to carry the composition.
Putting her shoe in there tied the idea back to a real person
and presented the opportunity for an interesting slogan.

I scanned in a piece of masking tape and edited it to look like
it was physically taped over the poster. Personally, I think the
tape reinforces the candid, whimsical feel of the poster and
creates a suitable container for the footer text. I also chose to
include the ProLiteracy logo so that the viewer would know
who the poster came from. All text was written in Trebuchet,
which has a clean but casual personality that really compliments
the tone of the poster. Gotta use that typeface more often.

Overall, I really like how this turned out. It's actually a very
straightforward concept, but still effective in its simplicity.
Easy to read and easy to understand, that was my goal.
I wanted to rely on the imagery to convey the message
since my target audience may or may not be literate.

Hope you guys like it! I think I'm a little in love with the photo.

When I first saw this from the thumbnail, I thought it was a professional advertisement, hence why I clicked it in the first place. When I realized it was simply a school project, however, I was pleasantly surprised. It's extremely well done, and you should definitely be proud of such a humble yet inspiring piece of work.
